Spirit work is a vast issue that many people are afraid of. Nothing frightens budding witches more than the prospect of their home becoming haunted as a result of their practice! I can't blame them; dealing with predatory spirits isn't easy. Nobody wants some random spirit rattling cabinets, giving them nightmares, and causing havoc with their spell work.
This is also for you if you're not sure if you want to mess with spirits at all! Knowing how to defend yourself and understand how spirits work can give you peace of mind and allow you to properly keep your boundaries. Claiming your authority over your experience of the world, including how and if you communicate with spirits, is an important component of being a witch.
Does Magic Bring Spirits?
One of the most common concerns that people have when they come to me is that conducting magic or acknowledging spirits would attract additional spirits. This "if I open the door, they will all come" idea is simple to grasp; popular culture loves to profit from it, and after seeing it so many times in movies and stories, it might begin to feel true. But there's good news: it's not true.
Developing your intuition and performing magic do not automatically attract spirits. In truth, most of the time when individuals begin utilizing magic and subsequently notice a large number of spirits, it's because the spirits were already around; they simply didn't realize it. As we become more conscious of the spiritual side of our reality, we begin to see and engage with it more easily, which means that previously unseen things become apparent.
While this may appear to be a bad thing, it is actually a very positive thing! When you're aware of what's actually there, you can make better decisions regarding your magical experience and protect yourself more effectively. And, undoubtedly, some people are more naturally inclined to attract spirits than others. This is extremely natural, similar to someone who is naturally good with dogs. Being good with dogs does not obligate you to accept any stray dog into your home.
Furthermore, most stray spirits are harmless. Some may try to appear tough and dangerous, but it's usually an act, and they rely on your fear and ignorance to pull it off. Spirits are analogous to the variety of life on our earth. The majority of the creatures you encounter on a daily basis are harmless; you're likely to see squirrels, birds, someone's cat, and the rare crow or dangerous bird. You might come across something a bit riskier once in a while, but this is the exception, not the rule. The average ghost attempting to frighten you is akin to a squirrel convincing you that it can beat you up. It's ridiculous.
We are normally the most powerful beings on this plane. We are both spiritual and physical beings, and as such, we are at our strongest when we are in a spiritual/physical world. Meanwhile, in a spiritual/physical environment, a purely spiritual being is at a significant disadvantage. Knowing this alone will shield you from the most vexing hauntings. Spirits prey on the gullible, and if you can see through their phony power, they will quickly abandon you.
There are larger, bigger, scarier spirits out there, but they are unlikely to enter your home uninvited. Because of the power that these entities have, many people wish to collaborate with them. They don't have to go looking for people to bother; people usually find them.
But Do you Need To Work With Spirits?
You are not required to perform anything in the craft that you do not choose to do, however, some things (such as magical hygiene) are highly suggested.
Spirit work can contribute a lot to the craft, but it is not for everyone. Some persons only work with specific spirits, such as a green witch who works with genius loci and plant spirits but not with departed souls or anything else. Some people avoid spirits who are not their gods. Some folks prefer to shun spirits entirely. Maintaining a relationship with a spirit is similar to maintaining a relationship with a friend or acquaintance; it requires time and consistency to make it fruitful, healthy, and pleasant for both parties!
In this regard, there is no right or wrong method to structure your craft; it just depends on what you are comfortable with and what you intend to achieve with your magic.
Why you may want to work with spirits:
You're interested in one or more spirits.
You practice a type of magic that would benefit from the assistance of a specific spirit.
Some spirits, such as ancestors, are easy to work with and have the ability to keep other spirits at bay.
Spirits can teach you new magical techniques that you won't discover in books.
Spirits can give your magic a lot of strength.
Spirits can provide isolated witches with a sense of community.
Why you should avoid working with spirits:
You dislike the concept of having unseen beings in your home.
You don't have the time right now to dedicate to spiritual relationships.
You're not very good at setting personal limits and don't want to be taken advantage of.
Your discernment/divination skills aren't excellent yet, and you're not sure you can distinguish between helpful and unhelpful spirits.
Magical cleanliness is essential in all magical practices, but it is especially crucial in spirit work. If you aren't already, you should cleanse and ward on a regular basis. You should also know how to cast an effective banishing spell and have the required tools and ingredients on hand anytime you're working magic.
These rituals will keep you and your space secure and free of undesirable spirits. This can be the extent of your spiritual practice, merely keeping your area spirit free, or it can be the foundation for safely and healthily bringing the correct spirits into your house. It places power in your hands.
1. Purification
Cleansing is simply the removal of negative energies from a person, location, or thing. Cleansing is the gentlest method of elimination, whereas banishing is a more powerful method. Instead of ejecting an irritating influence or spirit, you just remove the links that hold the energy in place, allowing it to be transmuted into something benign.
This procedure is important for ensuring that you, your living area, and the objects around you are free of energy that could damage or annoy you. It can be used to create a clean slate in your environment, prepare items for spell work, and maintain your energy consistent and healthy.
You should cleanse once a week for spirit work or keep spirits at bay, as well as before and after spells and rituals, and if you feel something is "wrong." Choose one cleansing approach that works best for you and stick to it.
2. Protection
Warding is used to establish an energetic safe place; it stops intrusive or unwelcome energies from entering your environment, reducing the amount of offensive magic required. Consider it similar to your computer's firewall; it allows only benign files onto your machine while blocking anything dangerous. Casting a circle is one of the most popular kinds of warding, used to safeguard magical workstations, although there are numerous others.
Wards are an incredibly adaptable type of magic; they can cover a single entity or, if powerful enough, they can spread across enormous areas of space to protect large buildings or even entire cities. They can be partly permeable, allowing only some energies to pass through, or entirely impermeable, allowing nothing to enter or escape. A ward can be used to keep energies outside or within. Wards are only limited by the witch's creativity and ability to cast them.
3. Expulsion
Banishing is a more powerful method of eradicating unwanted entities and energy from your environment. This is not a practice you should employ frequently if you already use the ones listed above, but it is useful to have on hand in an emergency. Essentially, this is what you'll turn to if a spirit appears and refuses to leave. This might be a spirit rejecting your cleansing efforts, or it could be that you called something and things were a little too real in the moment. If you conjure something too powerful for you to handle, DO NOT break your circle, leave the effort, or simply shut things down. You must instantly expel the spirit. This means that your banishing kit should be inside your circle and ready to use every time you call a ghost. After the banishing, properly stop working, break the circle, and promptly cleanse and ward your home.
