A witch's ability to cast spells is one of the things that makes them a witch. A "spell" is the word for the method used to do something magical. A spell could be made up of a ritual, a set of words, a verse, or any combination of these. Many spells are written down in books called Grimoires. Spells are limited by nature and can be as simple or as hard as the witch who casts them needs. Nature needs balance, so every spell, no matter what kind of magic is used to cast it, has a way to break.

Traditional and Spirit Magic practitioners say most of their spells in an old language that sounds a lot like Latin. But witches who use other kinds of magic have been recognised to use spells in different languages. For example, the Nine Covens of New Orleans, which uses Ancestral Magic, perform their spells in French or French Creole, while the Travelers, who use Traveler Magic, usually perform their spells in a language similar to Czech. Dahlia and Freya Mikaelson cast spells in Old Norse, which is similar to modern-day Norwegian, Icelandic, Faroese, Danish, and Swedish, with some Serbian and Croatian words in between. The magic they use hasn't been figured out yet. Cleo Sowande, on the other hand, has used Yoruba to cast a number of black magic spells. Even though spells are said in different languages, the syllables and sounds of the words are important. If a spell is said incorrectly, it may not work as planned or at all.
